1. Importance of Inline Density Meters in Wet Desulfurization System

In the desulfurization system of wet desulfurization for flue gas, the density of the lime slurry is an important parameter in the process of wet desulfurization, also the parameter needed long-lasting monitoring and adjustment. It's inevitable in keeping reliable quality of the desulfurizer, which weighs in controlling the desulfurization efficiency of sulfur dioxide. I. Lime Slurry Density

In the slurry manufacturing system of wet ball mill, there are two density meters in general. One is set on the outlet of the slurry circulation pump of the ball mill to measure the density of the intermediate lime slurry. The operator controls the slurry density to ensure the concentration entering the lime slurry rotational center and finally obtain qualified lime slurry.

Another density meter is set on the outlet pipe of the lime slurry pump to measure the density of the lime slurry entering into the absorption tower, accurately calculate the amount of lime added to the absorption tower, and ensure the automatic adjustment of the pH value of the absorption tower.

II. Density of Lime Slurry in the Absorption Tower

In the wet desulfurization system of lime slurry, lime slurry added to the absorption tower reacts with sulfur dioxide in the flue gas, and calcium sulfate is finally formed in the absorption tower after the oxidation. By measuring the density of the lime slurry at the bottom of the absorption tower, the density of the lime slurry in the absorption tower is monitored to control the saturation in operation.

In addition, the liquid level measurement in the absorption tower utilizes a pressure transmitter to  measure the static pressure of the liquid level directly for the sake of completely confined tower. Liquid level vary in different densities.

The liquid level is accurate only after density correction of lime slurry by a slurry density meter. In general, the lime slurry density meter is positioned at the outlet of the discharge pump.

2. Challenges in Wet Desulfurization System

Problems of slurry density meters have come up gradually over past decades. For example, they are prone to be worn, clogged and require regular maintenance, then those worn or clogged density meter fail to offer accurate real-time readings. For instances, the flow of discharge pump reaches 220 ton/hour, shortening the life expectancy of mass flow meter to two months.

Sensors measure the shift in the resonant frequency and/or the vibration damping caused by the lime slurry. These changes are directly proportional to the density of the fluid. The resonant frequency and damping signals are processed by the device's electronics to calculate the slurry density. The density value is displayed or transmitted for further use in process control systems.
